  Another great time in RIU palace

  Good except for the buffet food.

  Room 3052 (April 4–14) My feedback is based on the nightly rate I paid (approximately $450 CAD for 2 adults and 1 child per night) and my previous stays at the 5 Riu Palace Properties (Peninsula, Riviera Maya, Mexico, Punta Cana, Mauritius). First the good stuff. Beds, pillows 5* Shower, hot water, Towels 5* Entertainment (especially the Mexican Show) 5* Breakfast (especially the bagel section) 5* Cleanliness, hygiene 5* Gardens, landscapes 5* Staff, friendliness, Service 5* House Keeping 5* Given both the price point and my past experiences with the brand, I have to say that Riu Palace Costa Mujeres fell below expectations. In terms of overall value, this has been the weakest Riu Palace property I’ve stayed at. The most disappointing aspect of the stay was the food (lunch and dinner) at the main buffet restaurant. Compared to other Riu Palace resorts, the food here was bland, lacking in depth, and noticeably less refined. The menus felt overly cautious, as though designed to avoid any bold or distinctive flavors, which ultimately resulted in a very underwhelming dining experience throughout the stay. This approach does not align with the standard I’ve come to expect from the brand and significantly detracts from the overall experience. At this price level, I expect a much higher culinary standard, especially from a Riu Palace property. Unfortunately, the quality and execution of the food did not justify the cost of the stay and fell short of what I have consistently experienced at other locations. The pastry selection was particularly disappointing and fell well below what one would expect at this level. Both at the buffet restaurant and coffee bar, the pastries were not just underwhelming, but genuinely poor in quality...lacking flavor, freshness, and basic appeal. Most items were not worth more than a single bite. Given the overall standard associated with the Riu Palace brand, this was especially surprising. For comparison, I would strongly encourage the team to benchmark against properties such as Steigenberger Alcazar, where the pastry selection demonstrates what a high quality, well executed offering should look like (just watch some YouTube videos). I raised concerns about the food quality with reception on two separate occasions and formally requested the possibility of being moved to another Riu Palace property in Cancun. I was informed that Mr. Sergio would follow up after consulting with the sales team; however, no follow up was ever provided. Instead of addressing the core issue or even communicating a clear outcome, I was offered a bottle of champagne and a one time dinner at a specialty restaurant (which i politely declined). While I appreciate the gesture, it completely missed the point of my complaint. A single meal does not compensate for an overall dining experience that was consistently below standard over the course of a 10 day stay. This response felt dismissive and inadequate, particularly given the price paid and the nature of the concern. A more meaningful resolution or at the very least, proper communication and follow through would have been expected. I have two additional suggestions that could further improve the guest experience: 1) There was no remote control available for the air conditioning unit in the room. This made it inconvenient to adjust the temperature during the night, as it required getting out of bed to make changes manually. Providing a remote control would greatly enhance comfort and allow for uninterrupted sleep. 2) The urinals in the men’s restrooms in public areas (such as near Pepe’s and the buffet restaurant) are not very child-friendly, as they are installed quite high. I had to assist my son each time by lifting him so he could use the facilities, which was somewhat disruptive, especially during meals. Considering more accessible options for children would make the experience more convenient for families. Overall, while the property itself has potential, the current execution particularly in dining does not reflect the premium pricing or the established reputation of the Riu Palace brand.

  Vacation spoilt by insufficient Hotel Transfer

  Although I cannot say anything negative about the hotel itself or its services, I can only give two stars because of the complimentary transfer service from the airport to the hotel that they offer RIU Class members as a loyalty benefit. When I arrived at the airport, the shuttle had already left, even though my flight was on time and the waiting time for luggage was not excessive. When I called their hotline, they told me that the delay was my fault and that I would either have to wait two hours for the next shuttle or take a taxi at my own expense and then request reimbursement. I chose the latter, paid 160 dollars for the taxi, but never received the money back. At the hotel reception I was referred to the company Destination Services, which declined my request, stating that I was recorded as a no‑show. When I later complained to the hotel, I never received any feedback. After finding quite a number of negative reviews of the transfer company, I really do not understand why RIU tries to build customer loyalty with such a service. In my case, I will not spend any more money with RIU in the future.

  Apr 2026 family vaca

  We took our family (13 in total) to Riu Costa for Easter week. This hotel is great for families of all ages. I can offer this 1. Hotel rooms were spacious and comfortable 2. Pools were large and served all ages 3. The recreation pool was far enough away from other pools so it did not interfere with your pool time 4. Beach was excellent and the Riu family kept up the cleaning of the beaches...nice! 5. Food was really good and not rewarmed from yesterday... they had several fresh cooking stations that were very well kept. 6. Ala cartes (5 in total), the food was cooked as needed and was really fresh. 7. Hotel location is 50 minutes from Cancun...but for a family affair, it actually works out well 8. Staff were always friendly, happy to help and always working hard to make it great 9. Overall... great experience for our adult kids and grandkids.
