Try Harder
Review of Grotto Bay, Bermuda – 3 out of 5 Stars I tried in every way to give Grotto Bay a 4-star review, but in the end I just couldn’t do it. The problem isn’t the location or the scenery—it’s the lack of attention to detail and effort in areas that could be fixed quite easily. Let’s start with the positives. The views from the rooms and throughout the property are gorgeous. The hotel sits on a beautiful bay with crystal-clear blue water that often looks like glass. The landscaping is lovely, and you can see other islands in the distance. The main hotel building has been renovated and is very attractive, with a beautiful rooftop area and pleasant lounge spaces. The breakfast is quite good, and there was basic entertainment on some evenings. The location is also convenient, only about five minutes from the airport. The meals in general were ok but the food in Bermuda except for a few restaurants are mediocre. So why only three stars? First, the beds are extremely uncomfortable. If you have back issues, I would think twice about staying here. The guest rooms are dated and feel more like what you would expect from a typical 3-star property. The gym is perhaps the biggest disappointment. Much of the equipment doesn’t work properly, the water cooler is frequently empty, there are often no towels available, and worst of all, it is filthy. There were dust balls in the corners that looked like they had been there for years. That’s not a budget issue—it’s simply a lack of maintenance. The same problem appears elsewhere on the property. At the pool, the water cooler was often empty. Finding someone to help set up an umbrella or lounge chair could be difficult. The lounge chairs themselves look like they are 30 years old. Towels occasionally ran out, although not often enough to be a major issue. It didn’t bother me personally, but guests should know that there are rats and mice on the grounds. I’m not exaggerating—you will see them running across the lawns at times. As long as they stay outside and out of the rooms, I can live with it, but some travelers may find it concerning. I also found the hotel staff to be only barely cordial. They weren’t rude, but they weren’t particularly welcoming either. There is no real concierge service or anyone who takes the initiative to help you plan your stay or explain what to see and do around the island. Ironically, the friendliest people I met were the Bermudians themselves. They are wonderful. Ask almost anyone on the island for advice and they’ll happily spend half an hour telling you where to go, what to see, and what makes Bermuda special. With just a little more effort, Grotto Bay could easily be a 4-star property. My impression is that labor shortages may be part of the problem, but many of the issues—cleanliness, maintenance, water stations, and guest service—could be addressed without major expense. As for the island itself, Bermuda is beautiful. We’re heading to Cooper’s Island Beach today, which is nearby and supposed to be spectacular. Horseshoe Bay, especially the smaller coves around it, is also stunning, though it’s about a 30-minute ride away. So that’s my opinion. Take it for what it’s worth, and if you decide to visit Bermuda, have a great trip.

BAD ATTITUDES
Beautiful resort. However: rude, lazy, and poorly attentive staff. When asked to kindly refill a water bottle — the bartender said “that’s not my job”, as if this person does not pour drinks for a living. The manager, “Shamia” (I believe) is also extremely rude and did not care about her lackluster employees or our low quality stay. She dismissed all of our concerns. If you want a somewhat aesthetic place to stay with a TERRIBLE atmosphere — Grotto Bay Resort is your place!

Too expensive for this quality of hotel. The rooms are pretty basic and the aircon is so noisy
The rooms are pretty basic and the aircon was so noisy starting and stopping every 2 minutes. Sounded like a washing machine on a high spin cycle! I got a total of 3 hours sleep. The breakfast was so disappointing with very little healthy food offered. Should have eaten breakfast elsewhere. Our bill for one night was over $750! There was construction going on and the diesel fumes from the trucks meant we couldn’t open our balcony doors. Won’t be going back.

Heaven in Bermuda
My sister and I had a wonderful experience here. It was rocky at the start as we had to wait beyond 3:00 check in for our room. From there it was smooth sailing. The chef was wonderful accommodating my special diet. The servers responsive and friendly. Our maid was very pleasant. Be sure to visit the spa—Pam does a great Swedish massage! The only downside are the steps to get to the swimming area. It’s doable but know this in advance. It’s an easy bus ride to St George’s and Hamilton. I’d love to come back again.

Glorious Grotto Bay
Fantastic hotel made better by the friendly and attentive staff. Rooms are spacious and most have a sea view I think. The island is beautiful so do make sure you make the most of it and get out to see other places. You get a free bus pass (not sure if that is for AI guests only) and the bus stops are just a few minutes from the front of the hotel, it’s so easy to negotiate your way around the island. Food is excellent quality always something special on offer. Do try the spa the experience because of the setting is unlike anything else. We would return here tomorrow if we could … Hello to all the wonderful staff 👋
- AdvisoryWe are delighted to advise you the new Palm Court Restaurant is open! The restaurant will offer a new menu and more seating, yet still serve up the delicious food and friendly service that we are known for, with even better views. The contemporary Island inspired design and Mediterranean-Bermudian themed menu will complement the dining experience further against the backdrop of azure ocean horizons from every angle.
