    10/10 Would Come Back!

Check in was pretty quick once we arrived. Like some have said in other reviews, they tried to put us on the Tropical side when we booked the Caribe side. Not a big deal as I knew what to expect and she changed us to what we booked. We did not upgrade to VIP. They did try to get us to go to the “welcome breakfast/timeshare”, we politely declined and they let us go about our day. Room was clean and well located. We were across from the buffet and a short walk to the beach. Bed was ok but no duvet/comforter. There was a thin (felt?) blanket in the closet and we used that. Never had a problem with hot water, pressure. The shower had some issues with water coming out onto the floor and the shower head sprayed water onto the ceiling. Our bathroom door also dragged along the floor making a terrible noise (apologies to people that were below us). We did mention this to the maid and she said someone from maintenance would come look at it, they may have came but I didn’t see anyone and it was not repaired. As far as towels go, you get one bath towel per person, one hand towel, and one floor towel. We were only two people so this was not a big deal. As some have mentioned, bring your own if you’re a face towel person. Just a small note, if you are on the second or third floor, be mindful of your neighbours downstairs. We had what sounded like a family of elephants above us stomping around and moving every single piece of furniture around the room lol. The grounds are so beautiful. Very green and lots of trees/vegetation. Lots of wildlife including iguanas, turtles, ducks, peacocks, and my absolute favourite, flamingoes. The resort is not super large and there are a few trams that take you around. The staff work hard to keep everything looking clean and beautiful. We are beach people and did not use the pool at all but we did see most of the chairs with umbrellas taken very early in the morning there as well. It did seem fun with music and activities throughout the day that gets guests involved. We also don’t stay up too late so we can’t comment on the nightlife but the few shows we saw were well done. The lobby at night looked pretty lively. The buffet was decent. A lot of variety/choices although repetitive. Food temp is mostly lukewarm so by the time you get to your seat it’s cold, unless you get something cooked to order. Some things that are supposed to be cold are also warm/room temp. The servers we had were all great. Shout to Rafael in the main buffet, he was spectacular, anything we needed/wanted he got it for us! We did not do all of the à la carte restaurants. The only ones we did were the Mexican (ok), Brazilian (good), Teppanyaki (really good), and the seafood (really good). We paid for the seafood one as we were not VIP. It was $50/per person. Beach bar has a buffet for breakfast and lunch and was some of the same foods as the main buffet just on a smaller scale. Good to have if you didn’t feel like going all the way to the main buffet. This was probably the best and worst part of the trip. The beach itself is so beautiful. Soft, powdery sand. Water temp was amazing, not too cold, not too hot. It was pretty wavy but we had fun swimming regardless. There is an accumulation of sargassum along the water in the morning but they have a tractor come clean it daily. Like others have said, the chair game is REAL. Our first morning, we came down just before 8am and there were no chairs under palapas available. Luckily a hotel worker was repairing a fallen palapa and we snagged that one when he was done. The second morning, we came down at 7am, still no chairs with shade available. So, every morning going forward my husband went down at 5:30/6am to set our towels down. We can play the game also lol. Super frustrating for the non-early risers. A lot of chairs go empty for hours and hours, if not, all day without people in them. This complaint has obviously been voiced by many to the hotel and nothing is done. I’m sure going into the off season it won’t be such a problem. Most staff are super friendly and helpful. The language barrier is real for some. We speak three languages so it comes a little easier for us. They are quick to find someone else if they could not understand people. Find Rafael in the main buffet, he will take good care of you. These people work really long hours and often days on end with no day off. A little kindness goes a long way and if you se able, tip those who provide good service.

Lovely rooms, not so wonderful food.

have just returned from this 5* resort. I will start my review from our arrival. Our family was 3 rooms, my husband and myself, our daughter and her husband, and my brother and his wife. Arriving at the resort about 2 pm, we were told our rooms were not ready, had bracelets attached, and taken to the restaurant for lunch with instructions to come back at 3 pm and an envelope with name and booking number. We were all checked in by the same clerk. Lunch was very non descript, bland and with very little variety of food. But it had been a long trip and we were all hungry. Upon returning to the the lobby to continue the check in, my daughter got checked in 1st and headed to the shuttle that was going to take us to our rooms. She gave my husband her room number so we could find her shortly. I finished, told my husband our room number and then had to run behind my daughter as they gave us the same room!!! Another room was designated to our daughter and off we went to our rooms. We had made a special request of a scent free room due to severe scent allergies. Upon entering the room, we were assaulted by a spicy scent. we discovered they had reversed the rooms and the allergy sufferer was in the scented room and not the scent free. We also had only 2 bracelet room keys working, 1 for each room. Back to the lobby for my husband and daughter to get this fixed. However, we each had to have our keys recoded so another trip was made to the lobby. All in all, it took 4 trips to the lobby to finally fix the issue, and for the rest of the stay, our rooms had the wrong names on them. Our rooms were in building B. They had been renovated and we had no issues. The bed was reasonably comfortable and our cleaner supplied us a 3rd pillow the same day we requested it. Our mini bar was stocked daily and we have no complaints in this regard. Main Pool with swim up bar was cleaned every morning by 2 staff. They swept the bottom from end to end, cleaned leaves out of it, cleaned leaves from the deck and we never found a problem with it. Juan was a great bartender and served me most of my drinks. The music lacked a lot. When I go south, part of the experience is listing to music of the country. I heard very little and most of the music was remixes of stuff from 2000. It was also a fight between the entertainment crew at the other end of the pool trying to do their activities and the bar music. It would become very loud and mind boggling. The bar should turn their music off when the entertainers are doing their activities. Buffet Restaurant. We ate most of our meals at the main buffet restaurant. The staff varied and we seemed to get the same not so pleasant waiter most meals. It was difficult to get drinks, even water had to be asked for. The food certainly lacked for a 5* restaurant. Breakfast was mashed potatoes, rice, hot vegetables, tiny squares of fried ham, and fried salami in 2 sections. There was just barely cooked bacon 1 day and reasonably cooked bacon 1 other day. There were 3 egg stations but they were slow opening and early morning was only 1. Pancakes and french toast were beside the egg station and I had to fight my way through the egg line to get to it. Usually they had been sitting too long and were hard. A large dish of syrup and honey were there, usually with the wrong signs and I had to go back a 2nd time to get more pancakes after putting honey not syrup on them. There were 2 or 3 other dishes there as well with no kind of marking to let me know what they were. There was also a station of "salad" vegetables for breakfast each day. A cold food station had the same 3 or 4 fruits each day, 3 cold meats, again the same each day, and 3 varieties of cheese. The bread station was the largest part of the buffet. There were many varieties of breads and rolls each day. However, there was 1 restaurant rolling style toaster so there was usually a long wait for toast. There was a station of juices, but there were days that they were empty and you would have to wait for your waiter to get your drinks. On the plus side, we never had to wait for a table and the restaurant was never full while we were there. Lunch was much the same with the egg stations cooking hot dogs, hamburgers and other meats. One day I got chicken, which was nothing but bones. Another a piece of roast beef. It was well done as I like, but tough as shoe leather. I couldn't even cut it. Supper was very similar to lunch and the quality and variety lacked everything. I did have salmon steak one night, which was very well done, nicely spiced and delicious. However, 3 nights later, it was bland, no spice and overcooked. We had a day where they ran out of plates and we had to stand and wait for more to come. We found the elevator music they played to be extremely depressing. Most evenings it was putting us to sleep. It may fit for the older seniors and people with young children but we found it lacked a lot for a tropical resort. Not what we expected or wanted. A La Carte Restaurants. It is very difficult to get a reservation at the a la carte restaurants. We had to go each morning to get the next day. We did get to go to the Teppanyaki restaurant and the Brazilian Restaurant. Teppanyaki: The staff were wonderful and Chef Alberto was great. Unfortunately they only had 2 of the 4 desert choices and no fish, but it was one of the best meals I had all week. I would definitely recommend you eat there. Brazilian: Be prepared for an experience. They start with drinks, serve a dish of small breads (which you will look at and think there should be more) followed by salads. Then comes the swords of meats. Chicken, ham, beef, turkey, sausage and grilled pineapple. Desert follows. Most of this meal is just brought to the table where you accept or refuse it. This was a terrific experience. The staff were quick and efficient and the food marvelous. A definite must do if you go to this resort. Sports bar: We ate several meals here as the buffet was so bad. The cheese sticks are good, although be prepared they are not mozzarella but a cheddar. Club sandwiches were unavailable during our stay. Hamburgers are red, and although we were assured they were cooked, we couldn't get over the colour and didn't order again. Everything else was typica pub style food. Be prepared though, this is usually a very noisy place with the 2nd floor full of arcade machines. Entertainment: Because of the elevator music in the buffet putting us to sleep each night, we only managed to get to one evening performance. It was a magician and he was wonderful. The poolside entertainment daily was difficult to deal with as the bar music tried to drown out the entertainment staff. They did a variety of exercise programs but we didn't participate so I can't really comment on it. The resort boasted an archery range, which was open at 10:30 am each day for practice and 4 pm for a tournament. When my family went at 10:30 am there was noone there. Very disappointed. The mini gold course only had a few clubs and balls so we couldn't get equipment to play. Beach: The beach had a lot of palapas, however they were very short and I scratched myself many times trying to get under them. As per other reports, they were usually occupied by people's towels, and were empty otherwise for most of the day. The sand was wonderful. The water however, was extremely rough and I have since found information that says this is typical of the area. We had planned on sailing the Hobie Cat sailboat, but being fairly new to sailing, we did not feel we could handle the extremely rough water. The Yellow Flag was out the whole time we were there. Trolley: The trolley was a wonderful addition to this resort and we never had to wait too long for it. The staff who took the 6 of us and our luggage to and from our room were great.

Small resort, couldn't get reservations for a carte restaurants. and the people at desks were dismissive. I

The ocean was dangerously rough the whole week and my purpose in coming was mainly to swim in ocean.. on Bavaro beach.
